Once a smoke alarm sounds, occupants could have as little as two minutes to get out of a home safely. Working smoke alarms provide early warning allowing safe exit to get outside quickly.

That is why Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 is promoting this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” at the Colonial Area Fire Prevention Expo on Monday, October 7 at the Plymouth Meeting Mall, 500 W Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting. Teaming up with Spring Mill, Barren Hill and Harmonville Fire Companies, the event starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes until 8:30 p.m. Residents can watch live demonstrations including vehicle rescue and water rescue, and learn fire safety tips from local firefighters.

Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 encourages all residents to embrace this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme. The campaign, which runs from Oct. 6-12, works to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent), according to NFPA.

“Fire Prevention Week is a great reminder of how you can protect yourself, your family and your home from fire,” said Deputy Chief Calvin Perlman. “Following smoke alarm safety guidelines is essential to your protection.”

Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 offers these key tips in consideration of the 2024 Fire Prevention theme:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

While smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a home fire, the community counts on volunteers of Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 to keep them safe. To learn more about the ways to volunteer in the community, visit www.fightconshyfires.org.
